John McCain does not actually want to be my president.

At least, that was the impression that I got from the voice message that he left on my answering machine on the day of Washington State’s primary. The content was predictably uninspiring — basically a promise to keep doing exactly what our current Republican president is doing, because of course things have been going so spectacularly well that a “stay the course” message really resonates with the American people.

But what struck me was his tone of voice. He sounded so…
………………incredibly……
……………………..bored………

Now, I can see coming off as bored in an off-the-cuff interview when you’re tired or something, but this was pre-recorded, once, for the entire state of Washington. He could have done a different take. He could have done a thousand takes. I can only conclude that, either he thought it wasn’t important enough to do a second take, or that was what he wanted to sound like. Seriously tranquilized. John McCain, your quaalude president!

But I do start to wonder. I’ve been getting a kind of vibe from the right wing, I think they already know the Republican is not going to win. No matter who they nominate, no matter what campaign tactics they use, no matter what kind of fear-mongering they engage in. So they are going through the motions, because that’s what you do (the Democrats in 1984 come to mind), but they know it’s a lost cause.

(Yes, I know this is a little less than timely. I meant to post it a couple of weeks ago. And I didn’t.)
